Our first edition of G vs Sami is supposed to focus on who is the bigger sports fan between G and I. It's no match folks. This is like Ali vs. Tonya Harding. It's a whitewash, a bloodbath, a clinic in fanhood. To start, I have credentials. That's right everyone, I was the winner of the Biggest Sports Fan award my senior year in high school. I am locally renowned for my sports knowledge. That's not enough for you? While most people who are fans of an out of market team tend to be soft or "fake", I am not. No sir. I have been out to Wrigley Field in Chicago, as well as Stamford Bridge in London. I travel for my team. Of course I've been to the Garden and I've been to Giants Stadium dozens of times. When the Giants won the Super Bowl this year, I went to the parade and I made it to the stadium celebration immediately afterwards. How many people can say that? You know one person who can't? G, that's who. (You're damn right I just called out the entire New York Jets organization)
In all honesty though, I could have just put a huge Cubs logo right here and wouldn't that say it all. I was born two months after Steve Garvey in San Diego. I've watched the Cubs get swept out of the first round multiple times, and I've watched the 2nd worst playoff collapse in the history of baseball. Still, I buy the gear, support the club, and love my Cubbies. With all seriousness, if there is a bigger test of fan-hood than being a Cubs fan, I don't know what it is. It's like an evil mark on my life.
Ask around about how many people were supporting Eli Manning before the Super Bowl this year. I'll give you a hint: not many. I was though. I kept the faith. Maybe it was foolish and blind of me, but I have believed since day one that Eli Manning would bring a Lombardi Trophy home, and I was proved right this year. Eli's first two career playoff games? The home loss, 24-0, to the Panthers and the last second loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Oh yeah, and don't forget the catastrophe that was the Giants vs. 49ers back in 2002. And in case I forgot to mention it, since 2004 I've missed one Giants game, and that was intentionally (I skipped the Bears game this season, following the Vikings blowout). Let's recap this thing...BULLET STYLE!
-Biggest Sports Fan in High School
-Traveled to Chicago and London to watch home games
-Cubs Fan (speaks volumes about the fortitude of a man)
-Two Giants parades in one day
-One missed Giants game in 4 seasons
-Knicks fan during the "Jordan" Era
-Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS
-49ers-Giants 2002 NFC Wildcard
-Panthers-Giants 2005 NFC Wildcard
-Ravens-Giants Super Bowl 35
-Resting Carlos Zambrano for game 4 2007 NLDS
-Chelsea-Liverpool (2005,2007)
-Chelsea-United (2008 CL Final; 2008 Title Chase)
Look, at the end of the day I do respect G as a fan. He's got chops, and he may have slightly better knowledge than me in a category or two. But there is no competition between the two of us. A fan's might is measured in pain and misery, and there is no way this guy can compete with the awfulness that has happened to me. Look at that laundry list of miserable games. That's all within a few years span. Human beings aren't meant to cope with that sort of pain in that short of a time span.
