1. Manchester City- 6 Points
Last Week- 8
The Citizens have had a meteoric rise to the top of the power rankings. They deserve every bit of praise that is currently being heaped their way. Not only did they complete a 3-0 drubbing of Sunderland, but they also capped the week off by being bought by an oil sheik, and signing Robinho. The man who bought the team insists he will be the new Abromovich of English soccer, scary thought for a team that is already playing very well.
2. Liverpool- 7 Points
Last Week- 2
Still right behind Chelsea in the standings, but they were able to escape Villa with one point still in tact. Much more impressive than Chelsea's being held down at home. Lot of concerns over this team's health right now though, as Gerrard and Torres will be missing for the next few weeks.
3. Chelsea - 7 Points
Last Week- 1
Sunday's was a disappointing match for Chelsea fans. The opportunity was there to really put Spurs in a hole, and the Blues were caught a little off guard. They are still on top of the table, but they didn't take advantage of United being off for the week, and playing a distracted Spurs team.
4. Manchester United- 4 Points
Last Week- 4
They didn't even play a game, but they got better. The addition of Dimitar Berbatov makes this club an absolute offensive powerhouse. The team is close to full health again as well, and I expect to see CR-7 back on the field after the International break.
5. Arsenal- 6 Points
Last Week- 12
Maybe dropping them into the teens last week was a wee bit premature. They looked terrific at home against Newcastle, the 3-0 scoreline should have been 6 or 7- nil if not for Magpies keeper Shay Given. Still, this team needed to beef up, and didn't.
6. Aston Villa - 4 Points
Last Week- 7
Would have done well to grab 3 points at home against Liverpool over the weekend, but were stuck settling for one point. With the Gareth Barry saga behind them, and the addition of James Milner from Newcastle, this team looks destined to continue pushing the top 6.
7. West Ham- 6 Points
Last Week- 15
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One week they look terrific, the next they look awful. They beat up on a solid Blackburn side, 4-1, and then they go out and lose their manager. They made several astute signings before the transfer deadline, and are poised to sign Steven Appiah soon.
8. Middlesbrough- 6 Points
Last Week- 9
Sign of a good coach is to win the games you are supposed to win. They did that by beating Stoke, and have given the better clubs fits as well. Maybe I was wrong about Gareth Southgate all along.
9. Blackburn- 4 Points
Last Week- 5
You can feel the life slowly sucking out of this club. They slip further and further away every week, and that 4-1 beatdown at the hands of West Ham was nothing short of embarassing. Paul Ince's seat is heating up.
10. Wigan Atheltic- 3 Points
Last Week- 16
They are better than the 3 points say they are. They went into Hull City and absolutely dominated a lesser opponent, 5-0. I've been saying this team is better than the standings were revealing, and I'm starting to look smart.
11. Newcastle United- 4 Points
Last Week- 3
That's the Newcastle I know! It was starting to look like Newcastle were breaking the chains of bondage that destiny had placed upon them, but alas they return to form and receive a savage beating at the hands of Arsenal. They followed that up by selling one of their best and brightest young talents, and are now in the midst of a fight between upper management and manager Kevin Keegan.
12. Portsmouth- 3 Points
Last Week- 20
Everyone on the South Coast of England took a deep sigh of relief on Saturday. Pompey got beat up by Chelsea and United, and just as things were looking bleak, 'Arry's boys come roaring back. A 3-0 victory at Everton is proof that Pompey weren't that bad, United and Chelsea are just that good.
13. Bolton- 4 Points
Last Week- 14
They deserve a demotion for drawing at home against West Brom, but they move up because of the dreck that I still have to write about. It's going to be a dogfight for Bolton all season if they want to stay up.
14. Everton- 3 Points
Last Week- 13
Another loss at home? Against another team that you are directly competing against for a UEFA Cup spot? They've allowed 6 goals at home and scored only 2 this year, that is absolutely positively unacceptable.
15. Tottenham Hotspur- 1 Point
Last Week- 18
A draw at Chelsea is a good result for anyone. It's an excellent result when your team looks like they are falling apart at the seams. In reality, they probably should have walked out of the Bridge with full points, but the last time somebody did that Eli Manning was still at Ole Miss.
16. Hull City- 4 Points
Last Week- 6
I wish I didn't have to drop this team soooo far, but this is more like it for them. The honeymoon period is over for the new clubs in the Premiership, and they were rudely awoken to the sound of five goals hitting the back of the net courtesy of Wigan.
17. Fulham- 3 Points
Last Week- 11
Maybe it's not fair for me to drop them 6 spots when they didn't play a game. Maybe it's just that I know how the game they were supposed to play, against United, would've ended.
18. Sunderland- 3 Points
Last Week- 10
Cannot concede three goals at home and not expect to take a serious hit in credibility. They will be just fine, and the addition of Anton Ferdinand will be a wonderful success.
19. West Bromwich Albion- 1 Point
Last Week- 19
They finally get a point, and an important one at that. The games that will keep teams like West Brom safe from relegation, are the points taken from other relegation fighting clubs. On the road, it's a stolen point from Bolton.
20. Stoke City- 3 Points
Last Week- 17
