G vs Sami Vol. 4

The Worst Baseball Team: Mariners vs Padres

I just want to start this by saying what a tremendous disappointment both of these teams are. These two franchises should just be completely ashamed of themselves, they both owe their entire fan base as well as their respective metropolitan areas an explanation. Of course there must be an absolute worst. The Seattle Mariners are the lowest of the low.

Before we go player by player, let's look at some of the numbers. Seattle has a team era of 4.47, that's about .22 higher than San Diego's era of 4.25. And it isn't like you can say King Felix has been slumping, he has been lights out. That is a genuine barometer of the garbage that Seattle is producing these days. San Diego boasts Jake Peavy, but after him it's a quick trip downhill for that ball club. Another statistic that I thought was interesting was the fact that San Diego is 8th in the Majors with 580 strikeouts and a respectable .261 Batting Average Against. San Diego's team era is a little bloated, but 580 strikeouts and a .261 BAA is something any team should be able to compete with. Seattle's numbers? Well, the M's are ten points higher in BAA, 24th in baseball at .271. King Felix has helped carry the team to 540 SO's over the season, but they still lag behind at 17th place in the Major League.

A rundown of the two lineups shows that both teams are completely inept at hitting the ball. I don't think either of these teams could hit water if they fell out of a boat, but still I will show why the Mariners are the worst team in baseball. The best player on either team is on San Diego this year. Adrian Gonzalez is better than Ichiro THIS YEAR. I think that alone gives San Diego an advantage over Seattle. Position-by-Position, you might come up with a different answer, but I think the advantages are negligible. For example, sure Kenji Johjima is better than Michael Barrett and Luke Carlin, but that's more because Barrett and Carlin are terrible than anything else. If you look at team offensive numbers, the two teams are pretty close, and San Diego's league rankings are a little better.

Now, I'm sure G will point out that San Diego plays in the worst division in the history of baseball. The National League West, legitimately is a Junior Varsity division. I'm still not completely sold on that American League West either. The Angels are definitely quality, but the rest of the division is questionable at best. Does anybody believe that Oakland will still be around in September? The Texas Rangers are another trash team, they can mash the ball, but they are awful from the rubber. As bad as San Diego's division is, the Mariners aren't exactly competing in the American League East.

With that said, Seattle is 31-51 and San Diego is 33-51, Seattle is the worst team in baseball. That's my argument, and I'm stickin' to it.

See, even Cristiano Ronaldo is a Mariners fan...don't you feel bad for him?
